    Myrtle Beach Golf for Locals

    Myrtle Beach Vacationers not only group affected by golf rates increasing

    Not only has Myrtle Beach Golf Courses raised the rates for all tourists on their golf vacations, but they have also raised their rates for locals as well.  In the past two years, with the closing of approx. 15 - 20 golf courses, "Supply and Demand" is now the local market for Myrtle Beach Golf Residents.  Area courses have raised their local rates from $5.00 - $15.00, with Brunswick Plantation, Lions Paw, and Panthers Run raising local rates to $30.00 - $45.00.

    In addition, not only has Myrtle Beach courses raised their local rates, but also their Membership fees.  Sandpiper Bay in Sunset Beach - Calabash area - hiked their 2007 membership fee 40%, while Heather Glen - located in Little River, SC raised its memberships rates 25% - 30%.

    With Myrtle Beach raising their golf rates for Tourists and Locals, will it hurt or help the industry in the future?  Will tourists stop coming to Myrtle Beach and go to other destinations such as Santee, Hilton Head, Florida, etc.?  Will Locals now retire to another area where they can find golf memberships less expensive to fit their budget?  Only time will tell, but taking into consideration that all the independent golf courses in Myrtle Beach are going under, and with all the ones that have stayed opened joining forces or marketing groups, Myrtle Beach Golf seems on its way to becoming a monopoly.

    Myrtle Beach Golf Business

    Significant changes have been taking place with Myrtle Beach Golf Courses over the last couple of years.  The number of golf rounds have declined for many of the area golf courses, while there operational expenses continue to grow each year - making it very difficult for them to make a profit.  This has been great for the golfers the last few years because courses were lowing prices to try and bring in more business, hoping volume would produce more money.  These days are now over, with land values in Myrtle Beach soaring over the last year it has given the financially strapped courses a better option - selling to real estate developers.    Land values are so high right now you just can't blame the courses for wanting to get out when they can. This year alone, 14 courses have closed (there will be more in the near future) or are in the process of closing to developers - such as:

    *  ANGELS TRACE - 2    *  BAYTREE PLANTATION - 3    *  BELLE TERRE

    *  RACCOON RUN    *  WILD WING PLANTATION - 3    **  BURNING RIDGE WEST

    *  CALABASH GOLF LINKS    *  DEER TRACK    *  SEA GULL

    What does this mean for Myrtle Beach Golf Packages?  It's called the "Law of Supply and Demand"  With less courses now around to handle the demand for tee times, higher golf prices are in store for golfers in 2007.  In my opinion, golf packages will be up $10.00 - $20.00 per day over 2006 package rates.  Will this result in the loyal Myrtle Beach Golf Packager leaving for other destinations in the future?  Only time will tell, but my recommendation is to spend the extra cost wisely.  Use it to your advantage and play the better courses on the Grand Strand, there are a lot of them out there that only cost $20.00 more and are well worth the extra money.  Actually, most golfers that have upgraded there courses over the years, have enjoyed them so much you can't get them to go back to the average courses.

    Stop looking to purchase the lowest priced package out there being advertised and playing all lower maintained courses just to save a few bucks - remember you get what you pay for.  If you look at the list of courses that have closed over the years you will notice a trend that most of them were in the same lower price bracket.

    Let us know what you think about all the course closings, higher prices, and if it will affect your Myrtle Beach Golf Vacation.

    Note:  None of the pictured courses are ones that have closed, they are some of the more popular courses - can you name them.
